What is Botox®?

Botox® is a prescription medicine that is injected into the facial muscles. As we age, our skin begins to sag due to the slowing down of collagen production. This leads to the development of lines in the skin, particularly around the eyes. Botox® injections serve to block the nerve impulses in and around the injection sites, reducing the muscle activity that causes the lines to form.

Why Botox®?

Botox, which is short for botulinum toxin, is a popular cosmetic treatment that is used to reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles on the face. Botox is a neuromodulator that works by temporarily blocking the nerve signals that cause muscle contractions, which can lead to wrinkles and fine lines.

Are there medical reasons to use Botox®?

While some people may choose Botox for purely aesthetic reasons, there are several other reasons why someone may consider getting the treatment.

Those afflicted with Temporomandibular Joint Disorders (TMJ) can benefit from Botox® treatments. The injections into the facial muscles can suppress the nerves that are constantly tensed and cause discomfort. Injections can also reduce teeth grinding and eliminate headaches.

Botox is also used as a treatment for chronic migraines. The treatment involves injecting Botox into specific areas of the head and neck to prevent the release of chemicals that can cause migraines. Many patients have reported a significant reduction in the frequency and intensity of their migraines after receiving Botox treatments.

Botox can also be used to treat excessive sweating, a condition known as hyperhidrosis. The treatment involves injecting Botox into the affected areas, such as the armpits, hands, or feet, to reduce the activity of the sweat glands. This can help to alleviate the discomfort and embarrassment that often comes with excessive sweating.

Botox can also be used to treat muscle spasms, such as those caused by conditions like cervical dystonia, blepharospasm, and strabismus. The treatment involves injecting Botox into the affected muscles, which can help to reduce spasms and improve muscle control.

What about my facial expressions?

After receiving Botox injections, it is common for facial expressions to be temporarily limited or altered. Botox works by blocking the nerve signals that cause muscle contractions, which can lead to a reduction in the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines. However, this can also affect the ability to make certain facial expressions, such as frowning or raising the eyebrows. Many people find that the benefits of reduced wrinkles and a more youthful appearance outweigh any temporary limitations in facial expressions.

How long will the results from Botox® last?

Botox® treatments are temporary, which is something to keep in mind when planning your treatment with your cosmetician. Most treatments last for about four months, but individual results may vary. Dr. Do will discuss everything about the procedure with you and what you should expect.
